Grant brings arts to fair
August 24th
As reported by Northumberland Today
The skies may have been rainy, but it was sunny inside Friday as Northumberland Quinte West MP Rick Norlock announced a $12,000 grant for the Port Hope Fair taking place next month.
"The fair is 178 years old, so you've been doing things right," Norlock said.
"What a beautiful windfall to enrich our fair," fair president John Goheen said.
With the theme 'Community Harvest', this year's fair will focus on letting people know where their food comes from -- but it's more than that, Norlock said.
"Today we're incorporating arts into the fair, and that is one of the components of Heritage Canada that made you successful in your application," he told the fair committee.
The funding was provided from the Arts Presentation Canada program through Heritage Canada.
He added the thrust of the federal government is to encourage tourism.
"We want to bring people in to celebrate our culture and support the arts and artisans," Norlock said.
Mayor Linda Thompson was on hand to receive the good news and applauded the volunteers for their efforts on making the fair a very successful event.
"And I know this committee will make that $12,000 grant go a long, long, long, long, way," she said.
The first disbursement is to the arts community for the sum of $6,500.
"I am pleased that our government is continues to support local cultural events that strengthen our Canadian heritage," Norlock said. "The Conservative government is contributing to agricultural education and this grant will help to bring the surrounding community together to celebrate our local agricultural history."
The Port Hope and District Agricultural Society is hosting the 178th Port Hope Fair on Sept. 18, 19 and 20 at the Town Park Recreation Centre.
The fair features a combination of agricultural education, competitions, demonstrations and exhibits plus a midway.
This year's theme combines the characteristics of town and country, offering artistic creativity and diversity while showcasing local agricultural efforts that yield a wide variety of produce.
"It used to be mostly farmers, but now with people coming in from Toronto, it's changed the flavour of the fair," said Goheen.
"We now only have four active farmers on the board of 16."
